  Do you remember giving talks?

  i'm trying to remember the process for giving a talk.

  i remember getting a slip with a topic on it, but what else was on that slip?

  did it tell you what scriptures you should cite, or what book the talk was based on?

  Yeah I do, its something i never liked doing but felt obligated to continue, when in reality I so wanted to give it up. I think the school overseer can make a big difference on one's attitude towards it. In my old cong there was one overseer that pretty much praised you for doing the talk, but another almost seemed to want to find something to pull you up on. It was during the reign of this particular elder that I became more critical of giving talks, I at first would disagree with his council as his oppinion, and before long would just agree with everything but do nothing about what he'd said. Also at the time when the bible or watchtower reading came in without introduction or conclusion, I got talk no.4 constantly. The subjects were, as has been mentioned pretty embarrasing or obscure at times and made me very uncomfortable to both research and give. I certainly think my mind was begining to think and reason at that time, and soon I had walked away from the JW's and felt relief about giving up doing talks.

  Cheap-ass Watchtower tapes!

  i recieved 4 tapes of kingdom melodies from lee (thanks lee!

  ) so, i shoved one into my tape deck so i could hear "stay awake, stand firm, grow mighty" for the first time in ten years (man, that sounds like a song about my penis).

  however, i discovered that the pressure pads have gotten crusty and fell out of two of these tapes, and the cheap bastards at watchtower didn't put screws in their tapes so i could easily fix them!

  Now Linda is ill!!

  first it was her mum in hospital, then it was me, just for a night, though i've been ordered to rest and given 6 weeks off work, and now linda (fullofdoubtnow) is ill. she has a really bad bout of flu, which started yesterday, and i expect she'll be in bed for a few days.

  i just fed her some soup, which is about all she can manage at the moment, and she's gone back to sleep now.

  she sends her love to everyone on the board,i expect she will be posting again in a few days, but for now, she's confined to bed..

  Where does WT get their money for its operation?

  as ex-mo, i know the mormon church makes millions of dollars each year by having its faithful members pay tithings and running quite a few businesses.

  i am pretty sure wt as a corporate makes millions of dollars each year.

  otherwise it wouldn't build thousands of kh's across the world i guess.

  I have heard it suggested that if the donations (by the publishers and from the field) are not enough to cover what was received by the congregation, then the congregation itself will make up the shortfall. Perhaps a current or ex Elder can shed some light on what happens in that circumstance.

  Wanderer - I'm glad you post these type of threads, it opens up discussion on a subject that both those who have already left and those who are contemplating can relate to and think about, keep it up please.

  As far as your main question (the topic) I feel from my own personal experience, that to devote yourself to a religion like this that requires you make a stand against non believers (non JW's) in many situations - example: holidays like xmas, to devote much time and effort to it, that it simply must be right. The indoctrination has been leading your mind to not accept the possibility that it could be false or a lie. Any area's of doubt can really shake a person until they regain their JW mindset and push it away into the deepest part of your mind. It doesnt work on a logical thought process, but rather a conditioning, that replaces the right conclusion with the one the WTS wants you to think. When I am able to speak to current witnesses and ask them questions a mental wall comes up when something that could challenge their beliefs is discussed. It seems to me to be a mechanism, that automatically takes over to keep the person 'safe' from reality. It is also about dependance, like a habit or drug that one can simply not function without, and the fear of losing it is too much for them to consider.

  I have no problem with a woman asking a man out. All this stuff about playing hard to get and going on the hunt suggests confidence in one's self, something I couldnt say I have in abundance.

  The whole area of relationships seems a hard one to grasp - I've been married and had a few girlfriends but i still have no real social etiquette when it comes to this.

  How do you feel about Tatoos?

  i feel very offended and distrurbed when i see people covered with tatoos.

  some people have tatoos all over their bodies, even on their faces.

  there are also tatoo programs on the tlc channel that children can watch without a forewarning before the show comes on.

  I like some particular designs i've seen, I dont have any myself, but i have a mate who has quite a few and quite large too. As for the old argument that its like fashion and you'll regret it later on, well for some that maybe true but all the people I know with a tattoo, its become a part of them, not clothes that come and go.

  I believe it says somewhere in the OT the Israelites shouldnt have them, it also says they shouldnt cut their beards....

  what proof is there that the jws were chosen by jehovah to be a "people for his name"?

  growth in numbers is not proof, other religions also have displayed such growth over the last 100 years.. material prosperity is not proof as other religions also have considerable wealth, both in cash, property and real estate.. printing the watchtower and awake!

  magazines certainly is not proof!.

  The Solomon one about the two mothers and the one child, I'm glad you put the word 'stories' in, strange how people try to insist that the Bible contains factual accounts - such as Creation account, Noah and the flood, walls of Jerico etc.
